This course is designed to reflect the skills needed by Team Leaders and Event or Conference Managers responsible for the overall organisation and management of events in the Tourism and Hospitality industries.

The course is designed to provide you with hands on skills and knowledge to work effectively in a variety of roles and areas such as hotels, motels, conference/convention centres, sports clubs and more.

Employment Opportunities: This course is suitable if you wish to pursue a career in the range of occupations associated with the hospitality or tourism Industries in areas of conference and events management.

Event Management career paths also include work in: hotels, clubs and restaurants, casinos, cruise ships, island resorts, white boats (luxury boats) and convention centres.

Learning Pathways: On successful completion of this course, graduates may consider further study at a higher tertiary level within the vocational education and training sector.

Articulation: Individual students who are seeking to continue their study at university should contact the prospective university for any credit transfer arrangements. This course can provide a pathway to a Bachelor program at Southern Cross University.

Students will first complete the qualification, Diploma of Event Management at Gold Coast TAFE, and upon successful completion will be sent an offer pack for entry into the Bachelor program at Southern Cross University.

 

Delivery Method    

The course is offered for 50 weeks full time, Monday to Friday, for approximately 6-8 hours per day.  The course is delivered using on-campus, face-to-face classroom instruction and simulated learning environment.

Teaching-learning resources include:  study guides, journals, textbooks, CDs, and DVDs.

Assessment methods and tools include:  oral tasks (interview questions), written tasks (workbook, recognition of prior learning, tests, assignments, examinations), group work and discussions (case studies, role plays), project (workplace research project), and simulated or workplace performance (practical demonstration with observation checklists, and third party evidence of clinical placements within a clinical placement handbook). 

Assessment results recognise student achievement against each competency combined with performance level assessments (PLA).

 

Vocational Placement

GCIT coordinates and sources vocational placement within: hotels, conference and convention centres, and sports clubs.

 

Entry Requirement    

  • Completed Year 12 or its equivalent with sound achievement in English and Mathematics.
  • Mature age (18 years of age and over) with language, literacy, and numeracy proficiency.  Students under 18 years old should refer to the International Student Handbook for details on application.
  • Overseas candidates require English language proficiency 5.5 Academic IELTS or equivalent.
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) provides students an opportunity to have their current skills and competencies recognised.  These skills and competencies may relate to units you are about to commence and as a result can exempt you from studying these units.  However, there is a cost related to obtaining Recognition of Prior Learning.


Resources Required

Included in the course fees are learning materials (Study Guide, Assessment requirements, handouts, online resource lists, vocational placement diary/work book), and resources, etcetera. 

Students will have to purchase required text books ($210 approximate price in 2009), plastic sleeves for notes and uniform ($100 approximate price in 2009; two black shirts with GCIT logo, long black slacks/skirt and closed in shoes are compulsory for field trips). 

Students need to have access to a computer, the Internet, and a personal email account.  The booklist will be provided to students at orientation.
